FAQs

  • Why a Community of Practice for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)?

The idea to create a community of practice for women in STEM came from an observable gap during our Founder’s doctoral studies at the University of Waterloo. This community was established particularly to assist young women scholars during the transition from high school to undergraduate studies.

  • What does participating in this research accelerator entail?

Participation in the research accelerator entails following your interests and cultivating your innate talents, all-the-while contributing to a community for women in STEM. You may be more interested in meeting other women scholars over co-authoring research publications, and that is okay. The majority of participants have a keen interest in research and want to share what they know with others. We often complete presentations and talks together or join intellectual debates in podcasts and interviews.

  • How do you recruit young women scholars in STEM?

We use a dedicated social media strategy and word-of-mouth approach. We also have a dedicated SLACK channel to streamline communications, assist with onboarding, conduct introductions, and maintain on-going contact to ensure we have a strong community.

  • When do you meet?

Formal group meetings are set for once every quarter. However, most meetings occur on an ad-hoc and on-going basis 1:1 with our Founder. There isn't a formal meeting frequency as the emphasis is on support rather than schedule.

  • What core motto do you practice?

    The more the merrier.
